Adjustable Spring Bicycle Headset

This year long project centered around bicycle steering. In the world of mountain bikes, slack head tube angles (the angle the fork makes with the ground) sometimes give rise to a phenomenon called fork flop when negotiating a turn. This leads to an inherently unstable riding experience.

The main purpose of this project was to correct this phenomenon on a mountain bike with a slack head tube angle and provide stability by using torsion springs. The device also allows for adjustability of the torsion spring constant by using a lead screw to shorten the length of the spring legs and thus, increase the spring stiffness.
